David Sternlieb
Chief Operations Officer,
The Atlantic Philanthropies

David Sternlieb is the Chief Operating Officer for The Atlantic Philanthropies. He is based in the New York office.

Mr. Sternlieb is responsible for overseeing Atlantic’s global operations during its final phase of grantmaking. He works closely with the CEO and manages Atlantic’s Finance, Legal, Information Technology, and Facilities Management teams.

He joined Atlantic in 1999 as its General Counsel. In this capacity, Mr. Sternlieb managed the regulatory challenges and opportunities facing Atlantic’s Bermudian, European and U.S. foundations, advocacy organizations, and other nonprofit and for-profit entities. The diversity of these organizations and their legal environments allows The Atlantic Philanthropies to fund advocacy with greater freedom than many of their foundation peers.

Prior to joining Atlantic, Mr. Sternlieb spent six years at RJR Nabisco as Assistant General Counsel responsible for corporate finance matters. His prior experience was as a corporate lawyer at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in New York and Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue in Cleveland.

He graduated from Columbia Law School and Princeton University. Mr. Sternlieb serves as a Vice-Chair of the Board of Harlem United, a community-based HIV/AIDS organization.
